What Happens When You have a Conviction on your Record

For a first offense, you will have your license suspended immediately for 90 days. After the suspension has been lifted, the driver who received the DUI conviction will need to apply for the interlock program for one year. First-time offenders may also have their vehicle seized for up to 30 days and be required to take a remedial course. You will be fined a minimum of $1,000, depending on the severity and additional expenses such as interlock, courses and towing/impound costs.

A second offense will also result in an immediate 90-day license suspension. The driver will be allowed to apply for an interlock program after their license suspension has been lifted. They will have their vehicle seized for at least 30 days, must take a remedial course and will be required to pay a $2,000 fine. In the event of a second offense, a criminal charge is almost definite.

A third time offense will result in all the consequences listed above, plus you must take part in the interlock program for the rest of your life. Also, you will be criminally charged.

Keeping Rates Affordable in Edmonton

An insurance rate increase for drivers who have received a DUI charge is unavoidable. Premiums may, at minimum, double for those accused of a DUI. You can look for ways to reduce the impact without waiting three or more years for the DUI to be wiped from your driving record.

Discuss your situation with a Sharp car insurance broker in Edmonton and consider the tips below.

  • Take a defensive driving course. This will refresh your driving behaviour and you may be eligible for a discount.
  • Be sure to pay all outstanding fines, including your DUI charge, parking tickets and speeding tickets.
  • Raise your deductible. A higher deductible means you’ll pay more out-of-pocket in the event of a claim, but it will lower your premium.
  • Shop around for car insurance with the help of an expert DUI car insurance broker at Sharp.
  • Do your best to stay insured. If your policy is cancelled due to a DUI, try to get re-insured as fast as possible. It’s better for you to have a continuous insurance history.
  • Drive safely. Don’t add any offenses to your driving record.
  • Attend all education and treatment programs that have been court-ordered or recommended.

Yes, it is possible. But you’ll likely find yourself having to pay much more for your insurance after you’ve been charged with a DUI. Some insurers may cancel you after such a conviction, whereas others may not. You must inform your insurance provider of the DUI charge, or you’ll risk having any future claims denied.

While unfortunately is no such thing as cheap DUI car insurance in Edmonton, Sharp Insurance can help keep your insurance rates manageable.

There are several factors which go into calculating your car insurance rate following a DUI offense. The typical factors your age, current driving history, make and model of your car and more will be considered. In addition, the severity of the offense will affect your premium. Your car insurance rate will absolutely rise following a DUI offense and you’ll likely be labelled a high-risk driver. Most DUI insurance rates will be three to five times more than average insurance rates of a driver with a clean record.

The penalties for a DUI offense in Edmonton may vary depending on the severity of your conviction, as well as whether it was a first-time offence or not. If you refuse to provide a breath sample when you are pulled over, you may automatically be assigned a .08 BAC and it could result in a charge under the Criminal Code of Canada, in addition to an Immediate Roadside Sanction.

Even if you have been convicted of having a DUI, you’ll want to maintain a continuous insurance history to the best of your ability. As your premium increases, it’s best to work with a Sharp DUI car insurance broker. Start by applying for a free DUI car insurance quote in Edmonton today.

A DUI, or driving under the influence, is a conviction where a driver was caught operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You can be caught for a DUI on a boat, a truck, a car or an off-road vehicle. There are different tiers for DUI convictions, but these will vary from province to province. A zero BAC is the baseline. Some drivers, including newer drivers, must have a zero BAC while driving any vehicle.

For a BAC of between .05 and .08, you may receive a warning or a roadside suspension. This is considered the warn range, but drivers who do not have full licenses in Alberta may face serious consequences for having a blood alcohol range in this level.

A DUI charge is definite if you have a BAC over .08. That is considered the legal limit. For many, it doesn’t take a whole lot to get to this level.

If you were in an accident with another vehicle and that vehicle’s driver was impaired, yes your auto insurance would cover you up until your policy limits and for whatever is insurable under your policy, as Alberta follows a no-fault car insurance system. However, if you were in an accident and you were under the influence, your claim may be denied as driving under the influence is technically a criminal conviction.
